How to Use a Pendulum

A pendulum is a way to get information from your subconscious or your higher self. You can ask yes/no questions or more complex ones, depending on which pendulum chart you use.

Before you use your pendulum, relax. If you have time, space, and availability, lay the chart out in a cleared space, and use incense to help you concentrate. You can put some quartz crystals nearby to amplify the energy, or light a candle—anything to help you enter a meditative state. At the very least, surround yourself with protective white light or a healing aura in whatever way you have been trained. You can use Reiki symbols or energy here as well.

Always begin with very basic yes/no questions. It is polite to ask, first, if the aspect of yourself you are communicating with is willing to speak with you right now. If the answer is no, then put the pendulum and charts aside and try again later.

The ancient Hawaiian spiritual practice called Huna teaches that each of us has a three-part soul. Your middle soul, the uhane, is what you think of as “me.” You have a lower self, what some might call an inner child. This lower self has all your memories, even the ones you think you forgot, and anything you do by rote (typing, driving, work-related tasks) is actually done by this unihipili soul. The third soul, the aumakua, what some call the oversoul, is your higher self. This higher self is in contact with all deities and spirits, and with the akashic records.

In Huna, you don’t worry about how to talk to gods, or that you will connect to bad spirits. All your prayers and requests are directed toward your higher self, which is thought of as a kind of divine parent. If your higher self cannot answer the question or facilitate the request, then it will go and find the information elsewhere and bring it back to you. This act is also known as channeling, or accessing the akashic records.

A pendulum is widely used in Huna to communicate with this divine oversoul. Your middle self asks the question of the higher self while holding the pendulum. The higher self directs the lower self to move the pendulum (the ideomotor effect) in the correct direction. The three souls work together. A very basic pendulum is any type of small object at the end of a string or chain. It is easiest to read one that is slightly pointed. Hold the end of the chain between the thumb and forefinger of your dominant hand (some pendulums have a charm or bead you can grab). Rest your elbow upon a flat surface with the bottom center of the chart under the still point. Breathe slowly and easily.

Think about your question. Say it aloud if you can. Direct it to your higher self. Be patient. The pendulum will begin to swing very slowly along one axis of the chart, and that is your answer. A properly constructed chart should not allow for two different answers on the same axis—a chart should be a half circle or even just a partial arc. The simplest chart is simply for yes/no questions. There are three possible answers—no (back and forth like shaking your head), yes (up and down like nodding), plus maybe and unknown, which slant to the left and right respectively.

simple pendulum chart yes/noWhen you first begin to use a pendulum, you need to train your unihipili by asking simple questions you already know the answers to. Is it Tuesday? Is the dog in the room? When you are confident that your lower soul understands how to work the pendulum, start asking more difficult questions, keeping with yes/no at first, but asking things you don’t know but can easily verify. “Is Mary home right now?” Then call her and see if she is, after you get an answer. You can test foods and other items with the simple chart. Is this food healthful for me to consume? Should I buy this tarot deck? Should I answer this person’s message from a dating site? You can try to find lost items, with yes/no questions or by dowsing a layout of your home and yard. Some very advanced people can use a pendulum over a map to find water, oil, or precious mineral deposits.

pendulum chart time and numbersYou can ask about timing of events using a more complex chart. The inner triangles tell you what time frame—days, months, or years. Once that is established, use the outer ring for how many days, months, or years. You can also use just the outer ring for anything involving numbers—how many thousands of dollars will my bonus be? How many children will I have? How many cats should I adopt? If you consistently get a back and forth swing (no on the other chart, blank on this one), then the question isn’t appropriate, or can’t be answered at this time.

pendulum chart people and relationshipsThe final chart offered is one having to do with relationships. This could be a love interest, a friend, a co-worker or supervisor, a spiritual mentor, or anyone else you might meet. This chart has three levels of answers. The inner star tells if the person is younger, older, or the same age. (You can then use the numbers and time chart to figure out the difference.)

The blue star explains the type of relationship—mental, emotional, physical, spiritual. It is possible to have more than one bond with the same person so you might want to use the pendulum again on this chart. The final one tells the characteristics of the other person, and you’ll have to use the pendulum twice, once for the person’s gender and once for their orientation. If you don’t care about their orientation you don’t have to ask.

As with the time and numbers chart, if you keep getting answers that align with the empty star points, the question is inappropriate or can’t be answered. If you get an answer you aren’t happy with, you can ask if there is something you can do to change that outcome, by changing your attention and intention. Since your unihipili is playful, you might want to have more than one pendulum available. It might prefer a certain one for certain types of questions, or may just get bored with one and want to use a different one.

These charts will be available shortly on Zazzle.
